CINDERFORD TOWN

Cinderford lies in the picturesque Forest of Dean, and the journey to the game offers plenty of attractive views. The ground is probably best described as homely but this should not disguise the hard work that has gone into its construction.

The Causeway was bought for £1000 in 1947 and the first covered accommodation was a converted tool shed. Following fundraising, two stands were soon added and new changing rooms were built in 1952.

There was little further change until 1994, when the considerable slope on the pitch was levelled, with the excavated material used to form banking. Perhaps this disruption to the soil structure may have contributed to the regular waterlogging and postponement problems that the club now faces, although it is naturally a very wet part of the country.

Cinderford is a distinctive place, and I know there are supporters who like the area, and others who are not so sure. As far as watching football here is concerned, unless you have strong nerves I would advise against the covered terracing on the clubhouse side by the corner flag - the level of your feet here is lower than the pitch and it always feels like there is a real risk of the ball flying head high straight at you.

The constantly changing structure of football is exemplified by the record attendance at The Causeway, which was 4850 against Minehead in the Western League in 1957. The average crowd at Cinderford this season is 146.
