EVESHAM UTD

Equally unfortunately, it appears that Evesham have yet to complete their long awaited move from Common Road to a new ground.

The first feature of visiting Common Road is the narrow and awkward access road, particularly difficult for team coaches as we found to our cost on our first visit, when it was found necessary for the stronger passengers on the coach to forcibly move some parked cars out of the way!

On entering the ground, the next distinctive feature is the huge grass bank along one side of the pitch, which rises steeply to the railway line. As this implies, the ground is quite low lying but the pitch appears flat and reasonable for this level, and we have not yet had a postponement problem.

A reference book suggests that the ground looks older than its 40 years of age (it actually opened in 1968), but when relocation is on the immediate agenda it is unreasonable to expect considerable investment in facilities. In fact, the main stand pre-dates the rest of the ground, having been built in 1953 and relocated from Crown Meadow, the previous home. A clubhouse was added in 1975, and the newest main feature is probably the floodlights, put up in 1992.

We have had mixed results so far at Common Road, with a 3-1 victory and a 4-0 defeat, so these should be two unpredictable evenings out in Worcestershire.
