SUTTON COLDFIELD TOWN

One of the most striking features of the ground in Coles Lane is the unique grandstand, which gives an excellent elevated view from its tall perch beside the changing rooms. The stand owes its character to the speed with which it had to be built, after a carelessly discarded firework caused its predecessor to be burnt down in 1955.

In a familiar story for football clubs, the options for a replacement stand are limited by planning restraints which will only allow a building of the same size to be built.

Opposite the stand there is a length of fairly basic covered terracing, and there is some shallow terracing around much of the ground.

The Central Ground is of a reasonable size, with a capacity of 4500, with plenty of parking and a good sized clubhouse. My main reservation is the state of the pitch, which in previous seasons appeared quite rough and heavily used.

Directions

From M42 - Exit Junction 9 and take A4097 (s/p Minworth/Sutton Coldfield). At the major roundabout, follow signs for Walmley Village, not housing. Turn right at the lights onto the B4148, then left at the end of the shops into Wylde Green Road. Immediately after the railway bridge turn right into East View Road, which becomes Coles Lane. Ground on your right.
