ASHFORD TOWN Ashford Town sounds like it will be one of the smaller grounds we have visited in the Southern League, with a capacity of 2000 and a record attendance of just 750 for a friendly against Brentford before the 1998/99 season. The club was only founded in 1964 and won promotion to the Ryman League in 1999/00 after dominating the Combined Counties League, which gave AFC Wimbledon their start as a non-league club. The ground, lying next to the Esso West London Oil Terminal, has a small seated stand (100 seats) on the airport side (Heathrow) and some covered terracing. There is also terracing behind the Short Lane goal. Ashford have recently received a £47,000 grant from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund for the reconstruction of the pitch, including a new drainage system, with the aim of having one of the best pitches in the league this season. web:

Directions Leave M25 at Junction 13, on to the A30 and follow the signs for London. Remain on the A30 across the Crooked Billet Roundabout and continue until you reach a crossroads with Traffic Lights (Ashford Hospital on the left - Harvester pub on the right). Continue straight across the crossroads and proceed along the A30. Short Lane is the 3rd turning on the left, by a footbridge spanning the road. Ashford Town F.C. is the second sports ground on the right, immediately past the Esso sports ground, and just before the first house on the right hand side of Short Lane. |
