SWINDON SUPERMARINE For those who have not yet travelled this way, Supermarine is a ground without a community. It is a club formed from the merger of two Hellenic League clubs as recently as 1992, its links with Vickers FC having provided it with its spacious industrial estate site – set in a green area on the edge of town next to the giant Honda plant. Finding the ground is not too difficult if you maintain concentration at the numerous roundabouts and follow signs to Honda. Admission was only £5 last year and a smart programme good value at £1.20. There is normally plenty of parking, although there may be other events taking place as this is part of a larger sporting complex including the rugby club. The ground is not the most developed in our division, with tidy hardstanding but no terracing and no cover apart from in the stand, so take your umbrella if you don’t like sitting. The stands are modern and functional and can accommodate 300, which is plenty given that a crowd of 200 represents a good attendance at present for Swindon. The pitch is quite flat and reasonable, and improvements have been made to the pitch following drainage problems a couple of seasons ago. This season Swindon are a young team, with most of the players born in the town although they also have a Taunton born player. |
