A visit to 17th placed Cirencester gave Town the opportunity to reverse their ailing fortunes but they again failed to deliver and crashed to their sixth defeat in seven league outings, surpassing the last comparable awful start in 1976/77 (W1 D1 L5) and at the same time allowing The Centurions to gain their first home win of the season.
Although not setting the world on fire, Taunton at least appeared more organised and purposeful in the first half than in recent matches but the performance became increasingly lacklustre after the second goal was conceded. The fact that Tom King in the Ciren goal was not forced into one meaningful save all afternoon tells its own story.
A Gary Thorne header for the hosts was disallowed on 5 minutes for a foul on Simon Cooper and the game then opened up into a pretty even affair. Ali Pounde was brought down on two occasions just outside the box but the free kicks from Matt Rawlins and Ben Swallow came to nothing. Ben Newby then threaded a fine pass out to Swallow whose cross evaded any Taunton player, eventually coming off a Cirencester defender back to the keeper. Charlie Welch was also finding space down the left side but the home defence were doing enough.
At the other end Cooper denied Steve Robertson and tipped efforts from Jamie Reid and Matt Williams over the bar. The interval whistle was imminent when Town fell behind. A long ball from Reid found Williams who crossed into Robertson. His shot was saved but not held and Adam Heath rifled into the roof of the net.
Cirencester upped the pressure; Andy Minturn miskicked when given a clear sight at goal, Cooper saved from Williams and with 52 minutes gone, Minturn put the home side two up when he outjumped the Peacocks defence to head in a Steve Davis free kick.
This setback seemed to knock any impetus out of Taunton and they never looked capable of mounting a comeback. A turn and shot past the post from Rawlins and Swallow’s curled effort wide were the sole threats whilst Harry Etheridge’s drive over the bar was the closest Cirencester came to adding to their tally.
Another disappointing result and Town must hope to start picking up points sooner rather than later.
