Although enjoying the majority of possession, Taunton failed to score for the first time this season as they fought out a 0-0 draw at Gillingham Town in the FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round this afternoon (8 September). The outcome may have been different had Simon Ingram converted a first half penalty for the Peacocks but both sides had to settle for a replay which will be at Wordsworth Drive on Tuesday evening. James Blake fired over the bar from a Craig Herrod cross before Herrod earned Town a spot kick after being brought down by Nick Thomson. Ingram's penalty though lacked venom and was saved by Jonathan Hill diving to his right. The home side had several good opportunities during the game, most notably through Matt Chant including a shot which hit the post late on, Danny Thompson and Dan Cox. Taunton's best openings came with Dave Hambly's shot being saved and Herrod's cross from the byeline ricocheting onto the post off Hill. Gillingham's Jack Vallis received a straight red card near the end after kicking out at Neil Peek. Match report now online.
Post-match comment: Town manager Leigh Robinson said:" It wasn't our best performance but the aim was to still be in the cup at 5.00 and that's exactly what we are. I think if we'd scored the penalty we would have gone on to win comfortably but it wasn't to be. A potential banana skin has been avoided so far but we must be focused , not be complacent and get the job done on Tuesday."
