Taunton Town Results Match Review

Bristol Manor Farm v Taunton Town
1 - 1

The big matches keep coming thick and fast for the Peacocks. Hot on the heels of the FA Trophy thriller against Concord Rangers, the league leaders made the short hop up the M5 to take on third placed Bristol Manor Farm.

Leigh Robinson made two changes to Saturday’s starting line-up, with Ryan Brett returning after a one game ban in place of Ben Palmer while Chris McGrath came in at centre half for Brett Trowbridge who was suffering from a stiff back, and it was his side that had the first chance, Matt Wright heading a Pierce Mitchell cross well wide.

Thereafter though, Bristol Manor Farm began to demonstrate just why they have made such a fine start since promotion in the summer. The lively Ben Bament had an angled shot well saved by Lloyd Irish, but was not to be suppressed long, squaring an excellent pass for captain Jordan Metters to slide Manor Farm into an 18th minute lead.

Dan Sullivan sent a volley straight into Ashley Clark’s arms while Brett had two half chances for Town, seeing one shot deflected wide and another flash just past the post. Then Palmer, off the bench to replace the injured Ross Staley, put over a tempting cross from the left with which Ollie Chamberlain was just unable to make a clean connection. The best pre-interval chance though came when Shane White released Mitchell who swivelled clear of his marker and dragged a shot just beyond the far post. At the other end, Irish saved well from Matt Groves in first half stoppage time.

Attacking the creek end of the ground, Town were totally dominant after the turnaround with Irish a virtual spectator. Wright’s glancing header flew narrowly over the angle of the woodwork from a Brett corner, then was just unable to connect with a vicious inswinging cross from the same supplier before bundling wide yet another ball in from Brett.

Taunton thought they had made the breakthrough after 66 minutes when Wright headed a deep Ben Adelsbury free-kick into the path of White to force home from close range. An offside flag curtailed the celebrations, but the Peacocks were only to be denied a further three minutes, Mitchell forcing the equaliser when his fierce shot took a deflection off defender Lloyd Mills to wrong-foot Clark and creep inside the near post.

As the game entered the closing stages the visitor looked the only team likely to grab all three points. Manor Farm’s task had been made harder when former Taunton defender Steve Kingdon limped out of the action injured earlier in the half, but they hung on thanks in no small part to Clark. After Mitchell had cut in to fire in a left footer to provide a fairly comfortable stop for the Farm keeper, the Town wing back’s close range header was kept out by an incredible reaction save five minutes from time. Clark was then just first to the ball as Omar Simpson threatened from Palmer’s pass before he pulled off another diving stop to prevent the ball going in at the post following a cross from the right.
