Taunton Town Results Match Review

Taunton Town v Paulton Rovers
3 - 0

A dominant first half display set the Peacocks on their way to a routine victory over their North Somerset visitors. Paulton arrived having won their last two matches but Town were never in danger of becoming victim number three as they had too much in their locker.

Having played only 48 hours earlier, the Town side showed several changes from the one at Shortwood, with Owen Irish recalled at the back while Brett Trowbridge and Les Afful both stepped back into the team which emerged on a baking hot day at the Viridor Stadium. And on a carpet of a pitch, the hosts were soon asking questions of the Rovers’ defence, Owen Irish’s header from Shane White’s free kick safely held by Andrew Hannah and then another White set piece bouncing just in front of Arran Pugh and Irish to be caught by the grateful keeper.

A good run from Ryan Brett earnt a corner from which Matt Wright headed narrowly over before Brett himself wasn’t far off when he arrowed a left foot strike just too high from the angle of the box. The mainly one way traffic continued when Wright put another header over from Brett’s corner before Town finally got the breakthrough after 26 minutes. Joshua Cann lunged in on Ollie Chamberlain on the right side of the area and Les Afful comprehensively beat Hannah from the spot.

Wright had a decent effort deflected wide by Joe Chandler as Town remained in the driving seat, with Paulton restricted to scraps, Joe Hillard registering his side’s only real effort of note when he tried his luck from 30 yards but the shot failed to hit the target. Although White’s rasping volley then hit the net at the other end, it was the wrong side of the post, his strike flashing into the side netting after Wright had flicked on Brett’s throw. The 401 crowd were treated to a second goal before the half time whistle though. With one minute of stoppage time played, Lloyd Irish pumped a free kick into the box and after a spell of head tennis, the ball landed for Afful to tee up Chamberlain who found the corner with a delightful finish from the edge of the area.

Attacking the Invest Southwest End for the second half, Ben Adelsbury so very nearly made it 3-0 early on when he smashed his free kick off the far post.  Paulton enjoyed their best spell of the game either side of the hour, Chandler bundling a header wide from former Peacock favourite Dale Evans’ corner and then Evans seeing a free kick cannon off the wall from a dangerous position. However, despite being neat and tidy in possession, the visitors were not managing to hurt Town at all and came close to finding themselves further behind when Owen Irish nodded back Brett’s free kick and Lewis Powell directed a header against the crossbar.

Jack Ball spooned an opportunity over the top for Paulton but the game seemed to be fizzling out until Town sub Olly Mehew picked up the ball and cut in from the right along the edge of the box, outwitting a defender to find space to drill an excellent finish into the roof of the net for Town’s third on 82 minutes. Ross Staley shot over close to the end as the Peacocks coasted to victory to maintain their perfect start to the season.
