Taunton Town Results Match Review
Saturday 10 February 2018
Yate Town v Taunton Town
2 - 0

Taunton avenged their shock September defeat at the hands of Yate, their only league reverse of the campaign to date, easing to straightforward 2-0 victory in drizzly Gloucestershire.

The visitors made an excellent start, going ahead in the 11th minute. Toby Down drilled a searching ball into the box from wide on the left that a Yate defender did well to nod behind for a corner. Shane White applied a thumping header to Ryan Brett’s wickedly in-swinging flag kick and Craig Veal, on the line, got the slightest of touches to help the ball into the net.

The home side threatened to strike back immediately, Ross Langworthy turning Ben Adelsbury and scuffing his shot into the side netting. Taunton then enjoyed their most dominant spell of the match, and looked like extending the lead on a number of occasions. White curled an effort just over, then Brett and Dan Sullivan combined neatly in midfield to release Veal who just missed the target. Six minutes before the interval they almost pulled off a carbon copy of the first goal, White heading a Brett corner goalwards only to be denied by a brilliant headed clearance from Matt Tanner onto the crossbar.

At the other end, Mayson Evans broke clear down the left to set up the dangerous Langworthy who crashed his shot into the advertising hoardings. It proved a costly miss as Taunton bagged what proved to be the decisive goal three minutes before half time. White, wearing the captain’s armband instead of Matt Wright, unable to start due to a groin strain, pulled off a wonderful piece of skill to bend his left leg around a cross from Sullivan and hook a delightful volley inside the near post.

On a pitch that was heavy but nonetheless played very well on a day most games in the division were postponed,Yate enjoyed plenty of possession in the second half without ever looking very likely to get back into the game. Adam Price fired wide when well placed shortly after the interval after a Langworthy cross had rebounded to his feet. After coming on for Bristol Rovers loanee Lewis Ellington, former Mangotsfield frontman Kyle Tooze caused Taunton some problems, coming closest with a fine solo run and shot just before the close.

On the whole though Taunton’s rearguard, excellently marshalled by recent signing Keith Emmerson, was untroubled. The nearest they came at the other end followed a Brett free kick which deflected to Veal whose close-range drive was saved brilliantly by Harvey Rivers. With Salisbury’s game at Swindon Supermarine suffering a late call-off, the lead at the top of the table for the Peacocks is now up to twelve points.
