Bridgwater Town v Taunton Town
1 - 2

The Peacocks were beaten by their old rivals in a feisty friendly at Fairfax Park. The hosts, preparing for their return to the Western League following relegation, were lively early on with Steve Holland drilling a shot well over and Callum Ham’s flighted effort proving easy pickings for Lloyd Irish.

Craig Duff was put clear by Shane White and after his intended pass to Pierce Mitchell was cut out, he followed up with a shot that was blocked. Mitchell then headed Ben Adelsbury’s cross straight at home keeper Jake Viney as Town looked to penetrate but they were undone by some slack defending on 16 minutes which saw Bridgwater take the lead. Owen Irish, playing his first game of pre-season, was put under pressure by Arran Pugh’s pass and Mark Armstrong took advantage, robbing the ball and getting to the byeline to cross for Syd Camper to poke home from close range.

Town were not trailing for long as they levelled three minutes later. Lewis Powell turned his man and fired in a shot that was blocked, however the referee pulled back play for a foul and from the free kick Adelsbury planted the ball into Viney’s left corner to follow up his similar strike at Willand in the previous game.

Numerous errors began to creep into the game which finally saw its first corner just before the half hour, Josh White heading over his own bar to clear, before Duff controlled a high ball downfield from Owen Irish and set up White whose effort was deflected wide by Lee Begg.

Ross Staley fired a free kick over the top when play resumed after the break but it was the Robins who regained the lead four minutes in. Lloyd Irish brought down Camper as the Bridgwater striker tried to round him and Callum Ham converted the spot kick. Duff headed wide as Town tried to respond again, with five substitutes coming on en masse just past the hour.

Matt Wright had a header turned wide by Viney although the flag was already up, one of the few remaining moments of concern for the home side as the Peacocks seemed to run out of ideas. A couple of pacy runs from Joe Charles injected some spark into Town’s attempts while Ollie Chamberlain’s late snap shot was held comfortably by Viney but the latter stages of the ‘friendly’ will be remembered more for its bad-tempered nature, culminating in a player scuffle with just over ten minutes remaining.
