Taunton Town Results Match Review

Taunton Town v Bristol City XI
0 - 1

The Peacocks concluded their home pre-season friendlies with a narrow defeat to a stronger than envisaged City team. Recent signing Nathan Baker from Aston Villa captained the Robins side while former Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, West Ham and Norwich player Gary O’Neil was among several other first team squad members who featured.

After an early Ryan Brett corner had caused a flap in the City area and Lewis Powell had seen a shot blocked after a neat turn onto Ross Staley’s pass, the visitors settled down to stroke the ball around with assurance. Despite their possession though, keeper Lloyd Irish was not really tested. Charlie Coppola drilled an effort well wide and then had a strike stopped by Ben Adelsbury before a trip in the box led to the only goal of the evening on 27 minutes, Arran Pugh catching Diego De Girolamo who fired home the resultant penalty.

Staley hooked his attempt over the bar after Shane White’s cross had reached him but it was City who looked as if they might add to their tally, Freddie Hinds setting up De Girolamo to rifle narrowly over and Lloyd Kelly ‘s rising shot not too far off.

Town thought they had equalised with their first attempt of the second half when Brett netted after Max O’Leary had parried White’s effort but the flag was raised for offside. Powell was denied again after a close range shot was blocked as the Peacocks stepped it up a gear but City continued to threaten. Hinds flashed a drive across goal and past the far post and Taylor Moore curled a left footer just over from 25 yards while Tin Plavotic toepoked straight at Irish.

As the half progressed, Town began to gain the upper hand, winning a number of corners which led to several half chances. Moore headed over his own bar to clear Brett’s header while Owen Irish directed his header over and a jinking run from Les Afful gave Joe Charles a shooting opportunity but his effort was too high. Brett Trowbridge then released White who opted to cross rather than shoot but his centre was cut out.

Matt Wright was just unable to connect with Owen Irish’s flick-on before the striker unluckily saw the ball ricochet off him to O’Leary at the death. Despite the defeat though, the performance was encouraging in front of another very healthy Viridor Stadium crowd.
