The Peacocks returned to winning ways after Ryan Brett grabbed a late winner to claim all three points in what was ultimately a deserved victory.
Manager Leigh Robinson had the luxury of naming the same side for the third game running, with Keith Emmerson pleasingly starting after going off injured in the previous outing at Weymouth. Town made a dominant start to the game but were unable to convert their early superiority into goals. Andrew Neal’s looping header went just over the top while skipper Matt Wright had a good chance after 13 minutes but saw his header crash off the crossbar from Pierce Mitchell’s cross.
It was no surprise when the opening goal arrived after 26 minutes, Ben Adelsbury curling a free kick into the bottom corner after Wright had been fouled by home skipper Jorell Johnson. The visitors continued to attack, with Andrew Neal sending Ollie Chamberlain clear two minutes before half time but the home defence stood firm.
Town began the second half strongly and a foul by Dean Hitchcock on Dan Sullivan five minutes in resulted in another Adelsbury free kick but this time home keeper Charlie Burns dived to turn the effort wide. Just two minutes later the scores were level when Edu Toiny-Pendred found Mitchell Weiss inside and the Kings’ forward drove home a crisp left-footed shot from 20 yards past Lloyd Irish.
Town responded but Wright’s header from a Shane White cross was ruled out for offside before Weiss tried his luck from just inside the Town half after 62 minutes but saw his attempt go over the bar.
Both teams had chances as the game entered the final quarter. Sullivan sent a drive over the bar while Brett’s strike from just outside the box was palmed down by Burns while at the other end Ollie Chamberlain kept out a header from Weiss on the near post.
The winner arrived four minutes from time after a throw from Nuno Felix was not properly dealt with. The resulting White corner was only partially cleared, Adelsbury lobbed the ball back in for Wright to flick on and Brett was in the right place on the post to steer his header beyond Burns and ensure the journey back to Somerset was a happy one.
