Andrew ‘Rocky’ Neal scored twice on his first home appearance as the Peacocks gained a comfortable pre-season victory against a young Pilgrims side.
A very healthy 470 crowd were treated to an early goal, the lively Neal zipping in a fine cross from the left for skipper Matt Wright to volley home after only three minutes. Neal nearly added another moments later when he robbed Andy Burn and rounded keeper Harry Townsend but the angle was too tight and his cutback failed to pick out a Peacock.
A defensive slip at the other end nearly gifted Argyle’s Alex Fletcher an opportunity but his shot was blocked and Lloyd Irish comfortably held Michael Peck’s follow-up. Neal then doubled the lead with a delightful chip from the edge of the box after 16 minutes before racing onto Craig Veal’s pass to clinically slot past Townsend seven minutes later for the Peacocks’ third.
Despite being outgunned in experience and physicality, Argyle played some tidy football which saw Kuaydi Lolos fire two presentable chances off target at the end of the first half. The visitors then found themselves further behind seven minutes after the interval when Ben Adelsbury rose at the far post to head home Ryan Brett’s free kick from the right while Ollie Chamberlain set up Veal whose effort was blocked by Townsend.
There was a flurry of Town substitutions during the second half, allowing Plymouth to enjoy their best spell without testing Irish, but Town remained in control. Adelsbury’s free kick came close while Dan Sullivan’s strike was saved before Alpha Sow put Sullivan free down the right and the Senegalese striker was in the middle to receive the cross and fire home number five two minutes from the whistle.
