Taunton Town vs Wimborne Town

Recap

Match Report

In winning the South and West Division title last season the Peacocks beat 20 of their 21 opponents, two draws against Wimborne Town meaning that the Magpies were the only team not to be beaten by the Peacocks in that remarkable season.

After the annual Remembrance Day formalities, made even more poignant due the centenary of the end of World War I, the home team made a bright start and early chances fell to Lewis Hall and Matt Buse but the visitors also made a lively start and they took the lead after 12 minutes with a good shot by Curtis Young.

The Peacocks started to play some good football and were unlucky not to equalize after 36 minutes when a cross by Pierce Mitchell led to a shot by Craig Veal which was well saved by visiting keeper Gerard Benfield. The same player suffered more misfortune just before half time when his powerfully hit shot cannoned off the woodwork with Benfield beaten.

It looked as though it was going to be one of those days when the ball would not go in especially when Ben Adelsbury headed wide after 54 minutes from a Ryan Brett free kick. Brett himself netted the equalizer just two minutes later having made a solo run following an excellent advantage played by referee Tim Burley, who had a very good game.

The scores were only level for two minutes due to another contribution from Ryan Brett, whose shot hit the crossbar but was followed up by Dan Sullivan who forced the ball home.

Taunton continued to dominate and further goals were inevitable. After 73 minutes a cross by skipper Matt Wright was turned in by Craig Veal and just five minutes later Wright added a fourth with a powerful shot.

The game was won but Wimborne substitute Jack Lovell had only been on the pitch for a minute when his shot beat home keeper Lloyd Irish with 7 minutes left but the home side comfortably held on to secure the points.
